ZenMate Review

ZenMate Review

Used by over 45 million people worldwide, ZenMate has been around since 2013. ZenMate is the first choice of newer VPN users. This is because it’s easy to use, and even the website simplified and explained in simple terms. Perfect for those of you who are new to VPNs, using the default setup will have you ready to go in about 3 minutes including signing up.

The ZenMate App is one of the easiest to use that I have tested, and this made this review so much easier for me and adds to the appeal for the user. ZenMate have even made their website simple and easy to understand with no technical jargon and a simple list of the benefits.

Servers

ZenMate have a huge 3,600 servers in 74 countries and this number is ever increasing. Most of these servers are optimised for torrenting. This kind of enormous selection helps combat the bad neighbour effect and crowding. During this ZenMate review, we used over 80 different servers and locations for testing purposes. We encountered very few problems aside from a slight reduction in speed on the Australian servers.

Performance + Speed

We began our usual speed tests using Fast.com and Speedcheck.org, so we could verify the performance speed of several server locations. We carried out the tests over 10 days and worked out the average connection speed.

The results were notable with US download speeds of 90-140mbps, these speeds were consistently 90-140mbps over the 10-day testing period.

Testing of UK server speed was slightly lower with a consistent 70-110Mbps. Australian download speeds were lower again at 65-90mbps, but we expect this given the distance. The further away the server you connect to the slower the connection speed will be, this is because of latency over distance.

To put these speed tests into perspective, Netflix recommends a 25Mbps connection for HD streaming.

Unlocking Netflix content

When you connect to a VPN server in another country, you get access to content that is available in that country. For example, if you connect to a server in America you get access to the American Netflix library, which has over twice the content the of the UK Netflix library. This is the same for many of your favourite streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, HBO Go Disney + or sports networks like ESPN.

ZenMate gets this right with the Windows client, which has a section for optimized streaming services. labelled servers that are optimised for a specific streaming service such as Netflix US or BBC iPlayer labels.

We tested each labelled server, and they all worked well and almost immediately connected, except for the Amazon Prime server which we had to connect to twice, although it worked fine after that. Overall, very consistent streaming speeds.

Automatic Kill-Switch

A DNS leak is a security flaw that allows your DNS requests to get revealed to your Internet Service Providers DNS servers. This can occur even though you’re using a VPN service.  ZenMate provide built in DNS leak protection, which stops any DNS leakage.

ZenMate and torrenting

ZenMate allows and encourages P2P connections, which are fast and reliable for high speed torrenting. Much like their streaming section, ZenMate has a section of servers labelled and optimised for high-speed torrenting.

Gaming

We tested ZenMate for gaming ability; we connected to Steam, Origin, UPlay and Green Man Gaming easily with no issues and a consistent 120Mbps connection speed. The only issue was I couldn’t stop playing Fallguy for 3 hours..

ZenMate does not work in China

ZenMate have specified that the VPN does not work in China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Even asking that users based in China do not purchase a paid subscription, as the service will not work in China. This is because of restrictions on VPN usage imposed by Governments of the aforementioned countries.

Encryption

ZenMate uses an AES 256-bit encryption on the desktop and mobile app and AES 128-bit encryption on the browser extensions. This is a strong encryption and stood up well to our rigorous testing. Your data is safe with the 128-bit encryption, and the 256-bit encryption is almost overkill in terms of protection.

Security Protocols

In the settings section there is a choice of protocol for the more advanced VPN user. ZenMate has IKEv2 and OpenVPN TCP or UDP, with the older L2TP protocols no longer supported. Additional supports are available for different cipher suites offered by PFS (Perfect Forward Secrecy).

A feature that impressed me with is the option to connect via any random port. This is a nice feature because it allows you to bypass any kind of VPN blocking efforts while also blocking DNS and IPv6 leaks.

What is a No log VPN?

Some VPN providers offer a No-log network also known as a log less VPN. This extra layer of anonymity is because the provider does not log or keep any information transmitted over the network. This way none of your personal details or private business are collected, nothing you search for, download, or watch online gets recorded anywhere. Not even the VPN provider sees these sessions or has any information on who? Why? or where? Testing the ZenMate no-log policy is important for any review, so you know where you stand legally.

ZenMates privacy and No-log policy

ZenMate has a strict no-logs policy. However, the company based in Germany, which is a part of the 5/9/14-Eyes Alliance. So for this review, we carefully read and assessed the ZenMate privacy policy. The privacy policy is over 5000 words long and we found a lot of legal jargon, examples and circumstances which are not applicable to the everyday user. Items related to personal injuries and insurance that would have no effect on me or you.

Anyway, eventually after an arduous couple of hours analysing the document, we found this section:

And this section satisfied us that ZenMate have a no logs policy in place.

Identity Shield

ZenMate performs security checks on your behalf to detect if there are any data breaches online related to your email account. If they discover a breach, an email from ZenMate will notify you, so as you can change your passwords.

Value for money

First, ZenMate offers unlimited devices for a standard licence. The industry standard is 5 devices per licence, so this already adds value to the licence.

ZenMate pricing starts at $10.99 for a month, which is typical in the industry.

This falls to $5.39 a month on a six-month deal. The annual plan gives 6 months free so effectively $2.22 a month for 18 months and increasing to $3.33 after 18months expires.

You can also get a 7-day free trial to test the software. Although using the free plan, you can only choose between 4 server locations, and they cap speeds, but it shows the product well.

ZenMate offers an industry standard 30-day money-back guarantee. Use this 30-day money-back guarantee to try ZenMate for free! And if you do not like it, the company Kape Technologies will refund you.

Support

ZenMate’s support services have articles to help you setup the product and troubleshoot any common issues. However, there is no live chat support for our usual review tests on ZenMate. There is an email option with a warning that a response might take up to 48-hours! We tested this during business hours and got a reply in 1 hour; we tested again off-peak and got a reply in 3 hours. The responses we got were helpful and to the point, but this is not an ideal support service.

Compatibility

ZenMate is compatible with: ZenMate for Android – iOS - Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and most Chromium-based browsers – macOS – Windows - Android TV - Amazon Fire Stick- ZenMate for pc The OpenVPN support allows installation on gaming consoles, smart TVs, or operating systems like Raspberry Pi, etc..

Conclusion

This ZenMate review revealed an easy-to-use VPN with strong Apps that performed its functions well. ZenMate has strong encryption and security measures with consistent speed and performance. With over 3,600 servers to choose from, ZenMate easily bypasses most geo-blocks and crowding, unlocking the content you want.

There are plenty of additional options and features to cater to every user’s needs. The disadvantages of ZenMate are that it does not work in China, Iran or Saudi Arabia and has a limited customer support system. However overall, it is a great value VPN which is used by 45+ million users worldwide.
